KIMI RAIKKONEN has raised more laughs in the Formula One paddock by insisting he would rather finish fourth than third in the world championship – so he can skip the end-of-season prize-giving ceremony.
The enigmatic Finn, no lover of travelling, said he hopes to avoid the FIA gala in Istanbul, where the top three drivers of the season are presented with their trophies. And no one knew if the straight-faced Lotus star, who famously told his engineers to belt up on the radio as he raced in Abu Dhabi, was joking or not.
Raikkonen heads into Sunday’s F1 finale in Brazil in third place in the standings, 16 points ahead of Lewis Hamilton.
But with the Brit and his McLaren team on fire, there is a danger the 2007 champ could be overhauled.
Lotus boss Eric Boullier said there is no way the team will sacrifice the place just so Raikkonen can stay home.
Boullier told racing bible Autosport: “We will definitely do everything for Kimi to have to fly to Istanbul.
“We have to put ourselves in the same position we were in Texas. The objective is to have one car on the podium at least.”
Meanwhile, Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo has issued a rallying cry to his team ahead of Fernando Alonso’s last-ditch bid to become champion.
Alonso goes into Sunday’s race at Interlagos 13 points adrift of Sebastian Vettel.
But di Montezemolo said: “For the past 16 years, with very few exceptions, we have become used to reaching the final stage of the championship in this situation.
“Here we are again, so whatever the outcome we have been contenders. However, pride is not enough. We want to win.
“We go to Sao Paolo with the will to win, knowing we will fight for it right to the last kilometre of the last lap of the race. It will be very tough but I and all of us believe we can do it.”
